Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) do not know how to govern, following the performance of former President Akufo-Addo.

He says the indices of governance under Akufo-Addo is so abysmal to the point that the cliche of the NPP being tagged as the party that knows how to govern but doesn’t know how to win political power has been refuted.

Outlining the indices of good governance on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday, January 11, 2025, Prof. Gyampo said Akufo-Addo exhibited in its worst form, the ‘winner takes all’ politics during his tenure.

He explained that the aftermath of Kufuor’s administration which birthed the cliche that the NPP as a party was an expert in governance and not how to win elections whilst the NDC knew how to win elections but not how to govern, has been reversed because of how Akufo-Addo governed.

“The history of governance under Mr. Akufo-Addo has shown that when it comes to governance, NPP is incompetent,” said Prof. Gyampo.

According to him, the “winner takes all politics; practice of state capture and partisan monopolisation of power, authority, resources and everything surrounding power by the President and his cronies to the exclusion and marginalisation of all other Ghanaians” is what Akufo-Addo mastered in as President.

Gyampo stated that the only inclusion Akufo-Addo did under his tenure was to appoint Edward Nasigri Mahama as Ambassador at Large to “silence him and kill his political career.”

“Look at corruption, look at all the indicators, the fact that he could command chiefs to be getting up and to be greeting him. So, when we talk about governance; steering affairs of the state, good governance, efficient and effective management of scarce state resources such that it translate into developmental outcome that can tangibly be reflected in the lives of the people…, did he do that?” he quizzed.

The Political Science lecturer added that Akufo-Addo became an expert in “presidential gaslighting, telling people that things are well when things are not well.”

He chastised the former President for telling Ghanaians he has constructed Agenda 111 Hospitals when in reality those structures cannot be found in town. He also roped in the One District One Factory policy which the then government claimed it constructed but were no where to be found, adding that people still searched for jobs and couldn’t find, with the unemployment rate going up further during his tenure.

“So, in terms of governance, the NPP don’t know how to govern at all. And I’m saying this because the history of governance under Akufo-Addo has shown,” he stated.
