The National House of Chiefs has banned illegal mining, the practice also referred to as ‘galamsey’, on all of its lands across the country.
The House has promised to seize and destroy the equipment of anybody found engaging in the act on any of its lands.
A Friday, November 01, 2024 statement signed by the House’s Registrar, Anthony Yeboah Tabiri, which called on Ghanaians and the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure a peaceful election in December contained the message.
“…the National House of Chiefs condemns illegal mining with its environmental and health hazards, and henceforth Nananom declare the practice banned throughout their lands in Ghana.
“Nananom hereby resolve to seize, destroy any machinery, equipment, tools, implements etc. use in furtherance of the act,” portions of the statement contained.
He added that the National House of Chiefs will team up with the security agencies to ensure all offenders are brought to book.
“Nananom further undertake to liaise with law enforcement agencies to prosecute all offenders,” it added.
