John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is rejecting claims by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, that Ghana requires an upgrade instead of a reset.

He says the nation is already broken and can only be reset instead of being upgraded.

The Vice President, during a media engagement Sunday, August 25, 2024, indicated that what Ghana’s economy needs at the moment is an upgrade and not a reset.

This was an apparent reference to a statement John Mahama has been making as part of his campaign message.

According to Mahama, Ghana’s economy has not been in the best of shapes, a situation that the government acknowledges. It is for this reason that he has been calling for a reset.

However, Dr. Bawumia, who is also the flag bearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says “what this country needs is an upgrade, not reset. And if given the mandate, I will roll out the measures outlined in our recently launched manifesto to revamp the economy.”

“Sometimes I get amazed when former President Mahama talks about economic mismanagement. He should know his own record,” he added.

But in a sharp rebuttal a day after Bawumia’s comments, John Mahama at the NDC’s professional forum Monday, August 26, 2024, stated that something that is broken cannot be upgraded.

“I’m saying that this is a reset. Somebody is saying it’s an upgrade. But how do you upgrade something that is broken? If the engine is spoilt, how do you upgrade it? You need to reset the engine properly and put it in a stage where it can be upgraded. And so, we need to reset this country,” he stated.

He added that his reset is not limited to the economy as many see it.

“And when we talk about resetting we are not only talking about the economy and that’s why at the Manifesto [launch] I didn’t only talk about the economy, I talked about Ghana needs a reset, our economy needs a reset, our governance needs a reset, our attitude needs a reset,” he delved deeper.
