A former student of Legacy Girls’ College in Akuse has been crowned the overall best candidate in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), earning top honours across the West African sub-region.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) adjudged Huda Suglo Suleman as the overall best candidate in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In addition to emerging as the best overall candidate in Ghana, Huda was also recognized as the best candidate in the General Programme (Arts Option) in the examination, outperforming thousands of candidates across the West African bloc.

Two other outstanding candidates who achieved distinctions in the examination were also honoured by the WAEC Endowment Fund.

Paula Adzo Elinam Sowu, also from Legacy Girls’ College, was adjudged the second-best overall candidate in Ghana while Matthea Aba Andoh, a student of Hope College, secured the third position.

The honours were conferred on the three students during a brief ceremony held at the Sakyi Asare Menako WAEC Hall in Cantonments, Accra.

The event was attended by parents, close relatives, friends, as well as representatives from government and academia who gathered to celebrate the academic achievements of the awardees.

For her exceptional performance, Huda Suglo Suleman received a cash prize of GH₵30,000 and a laptop sponsored by Zenith Bank.

The second overall best candidate, Paula Adzo Elinam Sowu, was also awarded a GH₵20,000 cash prize sponsored by Agricultural Development Bank.

Speakers at the ceremony commended the candidates for their outstanding academic performance and for bringing pride to Ghana through their achievements in the WASSCE.

Addressing the gathering, Clement Apaak, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Education, praised the students for their dedication and discipline.

“This achievement demonstrates that excellence is attainable when talent is combined with discipline and commitment,” he said.

He further encouraged the award winners, stating that their success reflects the sacrifices and hard work behind their academic journey.

“Your success is a testament to the countless hours of study, the sacrifices you have made, and the support you have received from teachers, parents and mentors,” he said. “You have set an example for students of the Republic of Ghana and beyond, proving that with focus and determination, greatness is possible.”

The recognition of the three students highlights the continued commitment to academic excellence within Ghana and across the West African education system.
