Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur D-Black has revealed he was dismissed from Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary while in his final year because he kept breaching the rules in order to further his musical career.
In a recent interview with Blac Volta, the “Vera” hitmaker spoke about his love of music conflicted with the rigorous rules of the Catholic boys’ school which led to his expulsion in his senior year.
“I got kicked out in my final year. You know, when you’re in boarding school, the first time you break the rules, you get suspended. The second time, you’re
deboardinised. And the third time, you get kicked out,” D-Black explained.
He disclosed that his first violation was leaving the Koforidua boarding school without authorization in order to travel to Accra to record songs with Obrafour and Edem.
“In my first year, I left the boarding school to come to Accra just to rap. I had an opportunity to record in a studio. Obrafour and Edem were recording there, and Hammer was working on a compilation album. They invited us to be on it. That was my first suspension,” he recalled.
D-Black acknowledged that, in spite of the first warning, he continued to breach the school’s rules and regulations in order to pursue his music career, which led to more severe sanctions the following year.
“In the second year, I went back to school, same thing. I came to Accra to record in Taifa. We got caught, and I was deboardinised,” he narrated.
According to D-Black, his third infraction was when he returned to class late from a weekend trip to Accra although he had been deboardinised.
“By the third time, I wasn’t a boarding student anymore. So if I had traveled over the weekend, that was my own prerogative. But we came back on a Monday when we were supposed to be in class.”
This led to his expulsion after appearing before the school’s disciplinary committee.
“So, I faced the disciplinary committee. They kicked us out, about five of us,” he concluded.
