The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, is calling for a third party intervention in the resolution of the misunderstanding between the EC and the NDC.
He says third parties have always been necessary in instances where there is an impasse between two entities which cannot be resolved by themselves.
Dr. Akwetey says the two factions, with the EC being “the referees and rule makers” will serve the interest of the nation at large and not the NDC alone.
According to him, both the NDC and EC have exhibited mistrust between them and getting an arbiter to help with the issues will be the way to go.
Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Monday, September 16, 2024, Dr. Akwetey said his outfit was a bit concerned over recent developments with one of the two main political parties hitting the streets over the integrity of the roll.
“Because of evidence of mistrust between the two institutions, it ought to be resolved and if bilaterally they can’t do the job because of their suspicions, then, it’s important to have a third party like an arbitrator.
“It is in our interest that the NDC and Electoral Commission discuss issues in a cordial manner,” he said.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is today, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, staging a demonstration against the EC for its failure to heed to the party’s call to conduct a forensic audit on the voters’ register.
The protest, dubbed; Enough is Enough, according to the NDC, is to submit their petition to the offices of the EC across all the 16 regions on what it wants the Commission to do sanitise the voters’ register.
