Ernest Owusu Bempah, a Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asked those calling for Sammy Gyamfi’s dismissal to provide evidence of wrongdoing against him.
He says the gifting of money by the Acting Managing Director of the Ghana Gold Board, to controversial fetish priestess-turned-evangelist Nana Agradaa, was made on a private mission and cannot be accused of any corruption.
He explains that the norm of politicians giving out gifts to people is a practice which is not peculiar to Sammy Gyamfi alone, and he cannot be crucified for the gesture.
Speaking on a programme on Accra-based Net 2 TV, the NPP Deputy Communications Director likened the Sammy Gyamfi situation to that of the biblical adulterous woman who was brought to Jesus to be stoned.
He claims persons within the NPP, when they were in power, were throwing huge sums of dollars at women, and cannot crucify Sammy Gyamfi for something of lesser gravity.
Owusu Bempah has called on critics to provide evidence to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate Sammy Gyamfi if they feel he has engaged in any criminality, rather than criticising him unjustly.
“Do you have evidence that he has stolen money? Bring it out and let the Special Prosecutor investigate him,” he challenged.
His comment comes on the back of calls by the Minority in Parliament for Mr. Gyamfi to be dismissed for exhibiting opulence in public.
He believes Sammy Gyamfi gave out the money on a private mission and cannot be dragged for the gesture.
“He went on a private mission and gave someone money from his car. We should ask ourselves like Jesus Christ asked those who wanted to stone the adulterous woman, ‘who amongst you hasn’t sinned before’?” he asked.
“We know people from our party who threw 50,000 dollars at women behind the scenes. He who comes to equity must come with clean hands,” he added.
He described the fuss about the development as “dead on arrival,” adding that members within his party lack the moral right to criticise Sammy Gyamfi.
To him, “this noise about Sammy Gyamfi is dead on arrival. Nobody has the moral right to fight that young man. Nobody can attack him with this particular matter.”
Agradaa had clung to Sammy Gyamfi to give her money for fuel after the duo met at a funeral on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
According to Agradaa, Sammy gave her US$800, which has sparked public outrage, especially after President Mahama launched a Code of Conduct for Public Officials a few days earlier, detailing how public officials should conduct themselves to avoid creating public disaffection.
Critics have pointed to the video as potentially undermining the Code of Conduct for Public Officials, which emphasizes integrity, accountability, and transparency in public service.
Many party faithful have been outraged after the incident, not over the gesture per se, but the person involved, who is a controversial religious figure claiming to be an evangelist after being previously arrested for defrauding many as a fetish priestess.
Meanwhile, Mr. Gyamfi was summoned to the Jubilee House by the Chief of Staff on Monday, May 12, 2025, following the incident, to explain the circumstances surrounding the controversial gift that has sparked criticism and raised concerns over the conduct of public officials.
