The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has directed a probe into the 2020 and 2024 election-related deaths in response to a letter by President Mahama demanding an investigation into the incidents.

President Mahama on January 10, 2025, in a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, directed investigations into deaths which occurred in the 2020 and 2024 elections.

A report by the Chronicle Newspaper indicate that the IGP has set up a specialised investigative team at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) with timelines to work with.

The team is composed of highly skilled and experienced officers of the Ghana Police Service with Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe, as its chair.

The IGP has assured the President in his letter that the team will be provided with the needed resources to ensure it achieves its objective.

The investigation, according to the paper, will be on anchored on work already done by the IGP on the matter since he assumed office in 2021.

The source has further disclosed that the police chief, upon assumption into office, established the Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters to further investigations on crime-related matters without closure.

Also, it disclosed that the probe has seen some major advances on the election-related deaths with some suspects facing prosecution over the incidents.
