But for the intervention of Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, Jerry Rawlings would not have consented to the Mills-Mahama candidature, the retired military officer has disclosed.
The former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces has revealed that President Rawlings was in objection to John Dramani Mahama pairing late President Mills.
But according to him, Mahama was advised to consult Brigadier Nunoo-Mensah to speak to Rawlings on his behalf which he did.
However, the retired military officer reveals after becoming successful in the political space, he, together with other senior members of the Mills administration were all ignored.
This, according to him makes John Mahama a politician rather than human. Because to him, politicians are not trustworthy like humans.
“Mahama came to me when Mills wanted to choose him as his running mate and Rawlings was objecting. So he was told when I talk to Rawlings, he will listen. I called Victor Gbeho and we met Rawlings. So the two of us convinced Rawlings to accept the proposal because he respected us so he couldn’t even talk when we were talking to him,” he told Captain Smart on Onua TV/FM’s morning show, Maakye Monday, August 15, 2022.
But after being accepted, he revealed “politicians want favour. They don’t think about anybody. They lie their way to power. If I hadn’t spoken to Rawlings, he wouldn’t have become president. But when he came, he ignored me together with other leaders at the Mills administration. Mahama is not a sincere person we can trust.”
Despite everything that transpired, the Brigadier General said “I’m not pained by what Mahama did because he showed the character of a politician.”
Hailing the late president Mills as the only leader who possessed the traits of humanity, he revealed his past relationship with President Akufo-Addo which makes him refer to Nana as an untruthful person.
“I was Nana Addo’s campaign manager in 1998. I toured the whole country with him. I left and supported Mills. Mills was human not a politician. Akufo-Addo is a politician. Mills was truthful. Politicians are not truthful. Humans are truthful. Mahama is a politician, Kufuor is a politician. All of them except Mills,” he responded one after the other when Captain Smart asked him.
He continued that the motive of every politician is seeking favour from the electorates to perpetuate their parochial interest after getting power.
“Politicians want favour. They don’t think about anybody. They lie their way to power,” he indicated.
