The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has officially inaugurated a 13-member Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at a brief but significant ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior Conference Room in Accra.
The newly inaugurated Council is chaired by Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam, Lead Pastor of Cedar Mountain International Church and General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana.
In his address, the Interior Minister congratulated the council members on their appointments and urged them to work collaboratively towards a more effective, inclusive, and forward-thinking Immigration Service.
He stressed the importance of strategic leadership in enhancing the Service’s role in national security and migration management. He further encouraged the Council to stay committed to their mandate and strive for improved service delivery, operational efficiency, and innovation across all levels of the GIS.
On behalf of the Council, Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam expressed his appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, for the confidence reposed in him and his fellow members. He assured the Minister and the public of the Council’s commitment to advancing the goals of the Service and contributing to national development.
Reverend Wengam also reiterated the Council’s support for ongoing national initiatives, including the continued removal of street beggars, a social intervention program which commenced in the early months of 2025.
“We are grateful for the trust placed in us and remain committed to supporting the transformation of the Ghana Immigration Service into a modern and responsive institution. Our efforts, including the removal of street beggars, reflect our dedication to promoting national order and dignity,” he said.
The Governing Council is expected to play a vital advisory and oversight role, guiding the strategic direction of the GIS in the areas of policy formulation, resource mobilization, and institutional reform.
The Ghana Immigration Service continues to be a key pillar in safeguarding Ghana’s borders and regulating migration, with an expanded mandate that includes the enforcement of immigration laws, facilitation of legal travel and residence, and the protection of national security interests.
