Legendary Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie has appealed for a renewed investment in Ghana’s film industry for the sector to find its feet again.
There was a time when Ghanaian films and actors commanded attention far beyond the country’s borders.
But according to him, that presence appears to have faded, and he believes the industry needs renewed investment
Pete Edochie believes Ghana has no shortage of acting talent, describing Ghanaian actors as “exceptionally good.”
However, he is concerned about the decline in the number of films being produced in the country.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on TV3’s The Afternoon Show, Tuesday, October 6, the veteran actor said there was a time when Ghana produced many good films and had performers who were widely recognised, but that presence has gradually diminished.
For Edochie, the solution may lie with individuals who have the financial capacity to invest in the creative industry.
He believes there are wealthy individuals in Ghana who could provide the funding needed to get more productions off the ground, urging stakeholders to make a direct appeal to them.
The veteran actor also appealed directly to the President, expressing confidence that he would respond positively if approached to support the industry.
Edochie, who said he has “implicit confidence” in the President, believes the government can also play a role in supporting the industry.
“If I say, Your Excellency sir, don’t let our industry die in Ghana, he will respond,” he said.
For the veteran actor, reviving Ghana’s film industry will require more than talent. It will take the financial backing and commitment needed to give that talent the opportunity to create again.
