Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said government has ordered the immediate closure of Ghana’s embassy in Tehran, Iran, following the ongoing impasse in the sub-region.

This, according to the Minister, is to help protect the lives of Ghanaians who are working at the embassy amid the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” the Minister said in a Facebook post Monday, June 16, 2025.

“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect,” he noted, adding that “the evacuation through land borders covers all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other compatriots,” he added.

He disclosed that the Ministry is keenly observing developments in Israel to advise shortly.

Ablakwa noted that his outfit, has meanwhile, “instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department.”
