Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has described discussions about leadership succession within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as premature.
He has therefore urged party supporters to focus instead on governance and delivery of manifesto promises.
Speaking on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey on internal party dynamics, Edudzi stressed that timing is everything in NDC politics, warning that engaging in the wrong conversation at the wrong time can end political ambitions.
“In NDC politics, if you miss the timing, you are gone. History has shown that from 1992,” he said on January 3.
Edudzi explained that the party’s history is filled with examples of individuals whose ambitions collapsed because they entered leadership conversations too early.
“I’ve seen people with all kinds of ambitions in this party, and once they missed the timing, that was the end,” he noted.
While acknowledging the credentials and competence of political analysts and stakeholders contributing to the debate, he insisted that conversations about flagbearership at this stage are misplaced.
“This conversation about NDC flagbearership today is completely premature,” he said.
According to Edudzi, political dynamics within the NDC can shift dramatically with a single decision or declaration, making early predictions unreliable.
“It takes just one declaration to change the dynamics of everything,” he said, adding that many who initially appear sidelined can quickly become central figures.
Edudzi emphasized that the party’s immediate responsibility is governance, not succession planning. He said Ghanaians voted for the NDC with clear expectations that must be met.
“The only legitimate expectation of the people of Ghana is that we deliver on the social contract President Mahama signed with them on December 7, 2024,” he stated.
He warned that failure to deliver would weaken the party’s credibility and make internal political maneuvering irrelevant.
