Minister-designate for Trade and Industry Kobina Tahir Hammond is before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, undergoing screening for the appointment he has been given.

During the vetting on Monday, February 20, 2023, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Mahama Ayariga asked for his take on the size of the government which many have called for it to be downsised.

Mr Ayariga asked what he makes of the size of government with the current economic situation at hand.

In his response, the Adansi Asokwa lawmaker said “Mr Speaker, it is a point [Mahama Ayariga] has made. I think it will be a good idea if the president hears of this.”

Asked again why the Minister of State sits at the Presidency, he answered “I am not aware of it.”

The NDC has directed its MPs not to approve any of the ministerial nominees of the President as a protest to their calls for the government to cut down the size of its administration.

The party released a letter Sunday, February 19, 2023, asking their representatives in the House to reject the new ministers-designate.

On Monday morning, the Minority organised a press conference and affirmed their resolve to get the new appointees rejected.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin thinks the Minority are not demonstrating political maturity.
