Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, the Deputy Director of IT for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also know as Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is now facing what he was supposed to face a long time ago.

Speaking on the BigIssue on TV3’s NewDay Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Dr. Tanko-Computer said the previous government covered up for Wontumi, making him carry himself with pride, thinking he was above the law.

“The gentleman has always been pampered and carried himself with pride thinking he is above the law, because his party was in power and will always protect and cover up for him,” he said.

His comments follow the arrest of Chairman Wontumi and subsequent detainment by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, following allegations of his involvement in illegal mining and forest entry.

According to Dr. Tanko-Computer, the previous government in their power protected Wontumi to the extent that he could come on live TV to showcase gold without any fear.

“It’s not today that Wontumi is starting to misbehave in this country. He has been doing it even at the time his party was in power because he knew he had the support and will be shielded, should anything come and the then President himself could come out to defend him and plead for him when he was being questioned,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a senior lecturer at the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, on his part, argued that the NDC and the current government are desperately dragging Wontumi’s issue, and repeating the ills of the NPP. He believes the NDC is avenging the NPP for what they  did to them when they were in power.

“What the NDC and the current government is doing today is pure vengeance from the past,” he claimed.

Dr. Zaato claimed that the ongoing processes seeking the potential removal of the current Chief Justice is a revenge from the NDC on the fact that the erstwhile NPP government removed the then Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei.

“The government is fighting to remove the Chief Justice to avenge the removal of Charlotte Osei by the then NPP government,” he alleged.

He advised the government to be cautious of its actions, warning that if the vengeance trajectory continues, the same thing will be done to them when the NPP returns to power.

“You, NDC should bear in mind that if the vengeance continues like this, then the same thing will be done to you tomorrow when you’re finally in opposition and the NPP is back in power,” he warned.
