Former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has said President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was one of the persons who encouraged him to accept the appointment from John Dramani Mahama to become the Auditor-General.

He says this was after he had been convinced by his close friend, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.

According to Mr. Domelevo, his skepticism about the appointment following the comments that followed his new portfolio made him reconsider whether to accept the role or not.

He explained people assumed he was given the position by John Mahama because he lost the 2016 elections, so he could frustrate then incoming President, Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The man who was then working with the World Bank said he flew back to his station in Malawi where he received a phone call from his close friend, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who is also known as ‘Napo’.

Speaking on Maakye on Onua TV Monday, April 1, 2024, Mr. Domelevo said he expressed his skepticism to Napo who assured him of the incoming government’s readiness to work with him.

He added that the Energy Minister, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, called him on phone once again and handed him over to then President-elect Akufo-Addo, who congratulated him and assured him of his preparedness to work with him, adding that he has heard of his competence.

“So Napo called me on phone again and handed the phone to Akufo-Addo and he said “congratulations” and I said I should rather be congratulating you because you have won an election. Then he said I’ve also heard you’ve been appointed as Auditor-General and we are going to work with you. I’ve been told you can do the work with your eyes closed,” Mr. Domelevo disclosed.

He told host Captain Smart that he arrived in Ghana to be sworn-in by then outgoing President, John Dramani Mahama after those assurances from his friend, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, and Mr. Akufo-Addo, the President-elect.

Mr. Domelevo also disclosed that he returned to Malawi to officially inform his superiors at the World Bank about his appointment before resigning from his role officially.

Daniel Yaw Domelevo is an accountant who currently serves as a Board member of the Global Fund. He is a former Auditor-General of Ghana. He was appointed by John Dramani Mahama in 2016 to replace Richard Quartei Quartey who had retired from public service.

But President Akufo-Addo ousted him from office citing some reasons which the Supreme Court later found unfounded.
