The Elephants of La Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday began their campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on a big note with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau.

Goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Phillipe Krasso in each half of the game ensured that the two-time champions pick all the three points in Group A.

The win continues an opening day winning jinx for the West African giants which began after the 1996 2-0 loss to Ghana.

The Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau missed a few chances, putting up a competitive spirit in front of the partisan supporters at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara D’Ebimpé.

The other match in the Group will be played on Sunday with three-time champions Nigeria locking horns with Equatorial Guinea.

As it stands currently, the hosts go top of the Group with Guinea-Bissau lying bottom.

They will next face Equatorial Guinea while the Elephants come face-to-face with the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday, January 18.
