National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission (EC) must be removed.
He says that action is long overdue given the infractions committed by the Commission over the past years.
The former Member of Parliament says he will keep demanding the ousting of the Commission until a petition is filed to trigger a removal process.
“The fact is that the Commission in its current state is not fit for purpose,” he stressed on Maakye on Onua TV on Wednesday, June 11. “Everybody knows.”
He cited the decision not to hold elections in the Guan Constituency in 2020, leaving the people of Santrofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe (SALL) without a representation in Parliament for four years. Fred Agbenyo was elected in 2024.
“Form the Volta Region, then directly to Greater Accra Region,” Mr Asiedu Nketia cited, referring to the stand-off regarding the Ablekuma North Parliamentary Elections.
“You can’t even declare results,” he observed.
For him, no elections can end in a stalemate and that if the rules and regulations are strictly adhered to, results can be declared.
“If you have well-meaning people who want to really play by the rules, you can.
“No results can end in a stalemate without being able to declare results unless someone wants to use their power and do something at variance with the law.”
He stated that combining the Ablekuma North and SALL issues provides sufficient grounds for the EC boss’ dismissal, hinting at inquiries into other sectors like ECG and COCOBOD.
“Adding Ablekuma North to SALL is enough to sack the Electoral Commission (EC). ECG is next – no arrests yet, but it will come. COCOBOD will follow. We’re doing it gradually. If we all die the same day, who will bury us? It’s gradual; we’ll do it one by one,” he stated.
