Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, is admonishing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, leader of its incoming caucus.
Mr. Osei Owusu, also known as Joe Wise, has said the Afenyo-Markin’s knowledge on parliamentary proceedings and leadership dynamics of the House is something which is worth the role.
The Bekwai Member of Parliament says the current composition of the incoming caucus of the NPP puts the Effutu MP above his colleagues in terms of being Leader of the Minority in the 9th Parliament.
According to him, the longevity of Afenyo-Markin’s inclusion in the leadership of Parliament has given him the requisite experience having served under Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, during his era as leader of Majority and Minority.
He indicates it is only the Effutu lawmaker who possesses the wherewithal to counter the NDC’s overwhelming majority in the incoming parliament.
“I strongly believe in longevity and experience from our own actions and inactions. You can tell that when Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was the Minority Leader and Majority Leader, he stood out very clearly. But it did not happen by accident.
“He started as a Chief Whip and grew up to become a leader. The longevity brings experience and clarity so I would not support any request for a new person to be brought into the picture now. If you ask me, let Alexander Afenyo-Markin continue.”
Members of Parliament belonging to the NPP will occupy the Minority side of the House when the 9th Parliament is inaugurated on January 6, 2025, after losing their Majority in the December 7 polls.
