Director of Constitutional and Legal Affairs for the United Party, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for its decision to prosecute former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, an action he claims the office failed to take while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in power.
His comments follow a press conference held by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, on October 30, 2025, who announced that his office will formally charge Ofori-Atta and five former government officials by the end of November 2025.
The charges stem from investigations into alleged corruption, statutory breaches, conflicts of interest, and unjustified payments tied to the Strtegic Mobilisation Limited (SML) contract and related offences.
Mr Agyebeng stated that the investigation uncovered serious financial irregularities involving senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), as well as individuals linked to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) which include, Ken Ofori-Atta, former Minister of Finance; Ernest Akore, former Chef de Cabinet to the Finance Minister; Emmanuel Kofi Nti, former Commissioner-General of the GRA; Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, former Commissioner-General of the GRA; Isaac Crentsil, former Commissioner of the Customs Division of the GRA and General Manager of SML; Kwadwo Damoah, former Commissioner of the Customs Division of the GRA and Member of Parliament for Jaman South.
Speaking on JoyNews on Friday, October 31, 2025, Appiah-Danquah questioned the timing and independence of the OSP’s actions.
“My issue is that the OSP is briefing us without even reading out the charges. He didn’t have the courage to pursue Ofori-Atta when the NPP was in power. You claim to be independent and non-partisan, yet you failed to raise these issues earlier. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose for which the OSP was established?” Appiah- Danquah said.
He commended the Attorney-General for his efforts in pursuing justice.
“If the Attorney-General, whose client is the people of Ghana, prosecutes and seeks justice, what’s wrong with that? We should commend the A-G for upholding constitutional values. I fully support the Attorney-General’s actions,” he added.
