The Department of Planning at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has awarded Ibrahim Abubakar of the Media General Group as the overall recipient of its distinguished media awards, Environmental Sustainability Personality for the Year 2024.
Ibrahim’s exceptional reportage on the environment most especially on ‘Galamsey’ among other sustainable development stories won him the honour to be the second recipient of this prestigious prize after Multimedia Group journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor won the maiden one.
His award-winning story which spotlighted the plight of cocoa farmers in rural Ghana who were forced to sell their farms to illegal miners and his exclusive stories on how children below 18 years of age abandon their education for ‘galamsey’ pits and water scarcity due to pollution, earned him the recognition from the country’s leading science and technology university.

A citation in honor of Ibrahim Abubakar from the planning department read “We are pleased to present the Department of Planning’s 2024 Sustainability Award to Mr. Ibrahim Abubakar, a dedicated broadcast journalist at Media General.
