Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political analyst, has urged the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, to explain why the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, must attend their meeting despite being incapacitated.

Dr. Otchere believes the party’s actions will raise questions without clear justification for Ntim’s attendance.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Monday, June 16, 2025, he noted that although the NPP lost the December 2024 elections abysmally and may want to reorganise and come back stronger, the actions suggest that the party leadership may prioritise the interests of certain elements in the party over the Chairman’s health.

Dr. Otchere has suggested that Mr. Ntim’s decision to take a break from the party’s recent ‘Thank You’ tour may have been due to health issues, but was misinterpreted as a reflection of his calm nature, which didn’t fit the tour’s radical nature.

“The NPP General Secretary would have to clear the air on some of these issues that have found themselves in the public domain and will want us to know what they intend for example to happen during the meeting,” he stated.

He has urged the NPP’s General Secretary, Kodua Frimpong, to clarify the party’s intentions and agenda for the upcoming meeting, particularly given Ntim’s incapacitation.

Dr. Otchere’s comments stem from a temporary break by Mr. Ntim from his position, due to some health concerns he is currently battling.

The family, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the party’s Council of Elders Monday, June 16, 2025, asked the NPP to grant Mr. Ntim a short leave of absence to exclude himself from all party activities.

His medical condition, which the family described as involving a “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation”, will endanger his health and infringe on his well-being and rights, should he be forced to partake in any party meetings.

The letter is signed by family members including Kingsley Oteng (the family head) and Adelaide Ntim (the MP for Nsuta/Kwaman Beposo).

Ntim’s family therefore, sets out its reason for preventing their relative from partaking in any political engagements, including a meeting which has been scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 17, 2025 which he was expected to chair.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigours of active politics, but from intra-party activities – in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” the family’s letter contained in some parts.

Meanwhile, the NPP is yet to issue an official response to the family’s letter.
