Assembly Members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have endorsed President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang (King Zuba), as the new Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE).
The nominee, who was the former MCE of Obuasi required at least a two-thirds majority of the total 60 Assembly Members comprising both elected assembly members and government appointees to secure the position.
The Electoral Commission supervised the voting process, which was conducted through a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ ballot.
Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi faced little resistance during his confirmation, securing his position with surprising ease.
Now, the real challenge begins. The newly confirmed mayor must tackle pressing issues plaguing the city—from poor sanitation to chronic congestion in the central business district.
The nomination of Zuba was met with approval from many people in the city including members of the Kumasi Traditional Council, traders among others, who were expectant of this outcome.
In an interview with our news team in Kumasi ahead of the election King Zuta expressed confidence about his chances.
“I have met with the Assembly Members and shared my vision and plans for Kumasi. They have all responded positively to the new chapter I want to begin—with their support. I am confident that they will confirm me today so we can move Kumasi forward together,” he stated.
The decision of the Assembly Members has paved the way for shaping the leadership direction of Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, as the government seeks to accelerate local development and infrastructure growth under a new MCE.
He appealed to all to support him to deliver if endorsed by the assembly members.
