Kumasi High Courts 2 and 6 have dismissed petitions filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenging the results of the 2024 parliamentary elections in Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, and Obuasi East constituencies.

The ruling party had sought to overturn the victories of New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates, claiming its own candidates were the rightful winners. Despite recounts and the subsequent swearing-in of the NPP MPs, the NDC insisted the declarations were unlawful and pursued legal action to reverse the outcomes.

The petitions, filed by Evans Amankwah (counsel for the NDC), along with regional executives and the affected parliamentary candidates, argued that electoral irregularities had marred the results. However, lawyers for the NPP MPs countered that the NDC failed to adhere to mandatory legal procedures, including applying for security for costs within 21 days after the election results were gazetted.

In its ruling, the court sided with the NPP, stating that the NDC’s petitions did not comply with statutory requirements. The cases were subsequently dismissed for being invalid.

Additionally, the court imposed costs against the NDC – GH¢10,000 to the lawyer for the petitioners in Ahafo Ano North, and GH¢30,000 each for the petitioners in Ahafo Ano South West and Obuasi East.

This ruling solidifies the NPP’s hold on the disputed seats, marking another legal setback for the NDC in its post-election challenges.
