The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has taken notice of the refusal of some commercial drivers to adhere to the newly approved transport fares.
As of Saturday, May 24, 2024, the national leadership of transport unions announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, which is expected to be implemented by all commercial transport operators.
The KMA boss, has in a statement issued Monday, May 26, 2025, cautioned that any commercial driver who refuses to charge the approved reduced fare commits an offense punishable by law.
To ensure full compliance with this directive, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service will deploy staff to major roads in Kumasi to monitor and enforce adherence to the new fares.
“The public is kindly requested to cooperate with the authorities in this endeavor as efforts are made to restore order and sanity on the roads.
“The Mayor’s office appreciates the understanding and support of the public in this initiative, aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe transportation system for all residents of Kumasi.
“By working together, the authorities and the public can ensure that the new fares are implemented effectively, and the rights of commuters are protected. The Office of the Mayor remains committed to promoting the welfare of the people of Kumasi and will continue to take necessary steps to ensure that the city’s transportation system is efficient and reliable,” the statement said.
