A 52-year-old woman has been butchered by a young man believed to be in his early thirties at Behenase, near Kwahu Fodoa in the Kwahu West municipality of the Eastern region.
The victim, Yaa Atua, a mother of three, was attacked on the farm by the young man, who claims the woman possessed a demonic spirit and was therefore responsible for the community’s regression.
Eyewitness Kojo Aboagye tells Onua News’ Yaa Yeboah Boamah that he met the woman in a pool of blood after hearing her scream for help, with the young man wielding a cutlass beside her.
Aboagye explained that the man told him the woman should be burned with a GHC10.00 note and some coins to restore the community’s progress.
According to him, although the suspect is a stranger in the community and he can’t remember the name the suspect gave him, he can easily recognise him anywhere.
“I’m a cocoa sprayer and came to work for someone. So on my way back home, I heard someone screaming for help. When I got to the scene, I saw the woman who had been butchered in a pool of blood and a fairly tall young man. Although his face is familiar, I don’t know his name. I asked him what the problem was, and he told me the woman was responsible for the community’s lack of progress, so I should go and inform the residents,” he
He continued that the suspect “brought out a GHC10 note and some coins and told me to burn the woman with the money when the community members arrived. I asked him who he was, but I honestly can’t recall the name he gave me. It sounded like a name of a fetish. So, I told him I was going to inform the community.”
“While I was on my way to the community, the man was still standing there whenever I looked back. He’s not from this community, but I’ll be able to recognize him whenever I see him,” he added.
Agya Noah, brother of the deceased, explained that his sister is a peaceful individual who is calm and avoids trouble all the time, and he can’t fathom how she could have suffered such a fate.
He disclosed that they have informed the police to conduct an investigation into the matter, adding that he heard the suspect had been arrested in a neighboring community.
“The man (eyewitness) called me to come because my sister had been butchered, and when I came, she was gone. She has no grudges against anyone and she’s a calm person, so I can’t really tell why this happened.
“I don’t believe the claim that she’s demonic. I’m told the culprit had been arrested at Ataaso and sent to police custody at Central,” he stated.
The incident has left the community in shock, and the family is grappling with the loss.
