Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has thrown his full support behind the newly launched ‘Mahama Care’ initiative, calling on all Ghanaians to unite in boosting funding for the programme which focuses on individuals living with chronic illnesses.
Speaking on the Keypoints on May 3, Tameklo emphasized the importance of consistent financial backing for the programme.
“All of us here, we should, in unison, help increase the funding source into that particular programme,” he stated.
He also highlighted a key component of the initiative a six-month salary donation made by President Mahama to kickstart the Mahama Care programme, describing it as a commendable act of leadership.
In addition, Tameklo pointed to the significance of related efforts like the Edwumaruwa programme, underscoring the urgency and non-partisan nature of health interventions: “Disease doesn’t know politics,” he said.
The Mahama Care initiative has been lauded by many as a bold step toward strengthening healthcare support for those with chronic conditions.
Tameklo’s remarks adds to growing calls for collective action.
Meanwhile, Mr Tameklo has appealed to Ghanaians to trust the Council of State and the five-member committee set up to review the petition against the Chief Justice.
He cited the “exceptional credentials” of the committee members, many of whom are distinguished former Supreme Court judges, lawyers, and public servants.
“This is not a committee of political novices,” he added.
He warned against casting doubt on the integrity of the committee and the Council of State, adding that undermining their work would weaken Ghana’s democratic institutions.
“I cannot, and will not, sit in judgment over these highly accomplished individuals,” he stated.
The Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress said calls for President Mahama to act outside the Constitution regarding the Chief Justice’s impeachment process are reckless and dangerous.
“Why would you invite the president to disobey the Constitution?” Tameklo asked rhetorically.
He pointed out that President Mahama swore an oath administered by the now-suspended Chief Justice herself to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of Ghana.
“Any violation of that oath, Tameklo warned, could be grounds for Mahama’s own impeachment.
“President Mahama has no choice but to follow the law meticulously,” Tameklo insisted.
