The Ghana Lotto Operators Association (GLOA) and the Concerned Lotto Agents Association of Ghana (CLAA), have expressed fret over directive by the National Lottery Authority (NLA) to reduce the 30% commission paid to lotto agents and writers.

They have insisted not to comply with the directive stressing that the move would have terrible consequences on their businesses as well as on the livelihoods of the agents.

The NLA recently issued a directive informing the Executives of Ghana Lotto Operators Association (GLOA) and Private Lotto Operators (PLOs), to ensure the payment of a 20% lotto commission to the agents.

The reduction of the commission from 30% to 20% was determined by the Board of the National Lottery Authority in pursuant to Section 28 of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722).

Meanwhile, the Secretary of GLOA, Seth Asante Amoani addressing the media during a sensitization and stakeholders meeting stressed that the NLA is using the directive as enough reason to deny them renewal of their licenses.

He expounded that the NLA instructed them to implement the 20% commission payment yet the enforcement failed after they tried lately.

“They have asked us to implement the 20% commission, we told them it will be very difficult but they wouldn’t listen, so now that we have tried implementing it and it’s not working I think we have to withdraw the proposal and meet them again and see what we can agree.

“We suspect that NLA is doing this because they know that the 20% commission is difficult to implement and if we refuse to implement then they will use that as a yardstick to revoke our licenses and we will not be in business anymore,” he stated.

Executive Secretary of Concerned Lotto Agents, Kwame Duah Tawiah, on his turn called on the NLA to critically examine the potential consequences of its decision on the economy and rescind the directive with an immediate effect.

Kwame Duah Tawiah has threatened to mobilize the writers to stage a demonstration against the government if they fail to adhere to the call and withdraw the proposal.

He has, thus, charged the writers to be determined and strongly oppose the proposal as it has dire consequences on their livelihood.
