President John Dramani Mahama has sworn-in a seven-member Council to spearhead affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The event which was carried Monday morning, March 24, 2025, at the Ministry of Defence, had the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as its Chairperson.
Other members on the Council include the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Interior Minister and Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka.
The others are Daniel Addo, Fuseini Iddrisu and Nancy Darkwa Ampofo, who are all members on the Council as established by Article 211 of the 1992 Constitution.
During his speech, President Mahama lauded the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for its commitment towards the peace of the country and beyond, gaining international recognition for its distinguished role in serving as peacekeepers.
He established that the GAF has become the bedrock of the nation’s democracy having being the guardians of the sovereignty of the state over the years.
“Our forces are not just a vital institution within our national security framework, they are the guardians of the sovereignty, the protectors of our democracy, and a source of immense pride for the people of Ghana.
“For decades, the GAF has stood as a disciplined professional and highly respected institution earning international recognition for your dedication to peacekeeping missions, humanitarian efforts and the defence of our territorial integrity,” stated the President.
He charged the Council to instill its responsibility of rolling out policies that complement the braveness of the officers in discharging their duties.
“The responsibility placed on your shoulders as a Council is one of great national importance. The strength of our armed forces depends not only on the bravely of the men and women in uniform but also of the leadership policy and decisions that guide them.”
In spelling out its mandate, President Mahama charged the Council; “to provide strategic leadership and oversight that ensures the Ghana Armed Forces remain an effective modern and disciplined force; to uphold the highest standard of governance professionalism and accountability within the military; to safeguard the warfare of our officers, men and women who risk their lives in the service of our nation.”
The President reminded the Council that the decisions it makes henceforth, is what will shape the future of the GAF, reminding them of how important to discharge such with “wisdom, integrity and a deep commitment to national service.”
