The President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced the establishment of regional hospitals and sports stadia for the six new regions that were created under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.

According to the President, there will be a sod-cutting ceremony for the projects this year.

Speaking during the final day of his two-day “Resetting Ghana” tour of the Savannah region on Saturday, May 23, 2026, President Mahama noted that three of the regions are going start with a sports stadia first, while the other three will commence with the regional hospitals project.

“We are including in the budget, starting this year, with three new sports stadia. These are for the six new regions that do not have sports facilities,” he noted.

For the Savanna and two other regions, he noted that “because we are getting the regional hospital, we’ve been asked to wait and the three stadia will be given to the other regions that have not yet been served.”

He explained that the projects will be reversed in the subsequent year. “So, next year, once our hospitals are progressing, then we’ll also get the sports stadia and then the other three regions will also have their regional hospitals starting.”

Ghana officially added six new regions to its administrative map, increasing the country’s total regions from 10 to 16. The new regions are Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah, North East, Western North, and Oti, carved out from the existing Brong Ahafo, Northern, Western, and Volta regions respectively.

The creation followed a referendum on December 27, 2018, where citizens voted in favor of the new regions.

The process began with petitions from chiefs and opinion leaders, approved by the Council of State, and a commission led by Justice Brobbey to gauge public opinion. According to the then administration, the regions were aimed at improving governance and bring development closer to the people.

Meanwhile, President Mahama says the projects will commence this year. “So, this year, we’ll cut sod for six new regional hospitals for the six new regions, three of them will get regional hospitals, three are going to get sports stadia and then next year, we’ll reverse it,” he stated.
