John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asked the party’s caucus in Parliament to ignore the NPP group’s request for a recall of the House.
John Mahama says there are some few days left for the December general elections and the candidates are busily selling their policies to their constituents.
He says it will not be prudent at this time for the legislators to abandon their campaigns to embark on a parliamentary recall to discuss government business.
Members of the New Patriotic Party (NDC) and the NDC caucuses in Parliament have been at loggerheads with each other for the past few weeks following a ruling by the Speaker to declare some seats vacant.
The act reduced the membership of the NPP who were then Majority to become Minority, with the opposition NDC members becoming Majority in the process.
The matter was taken to the Supreme Court and the ruling of the Speaker was stayed, where a final interpretation of the Article 97(g)(h) which the Speaker used was given by the apex court afterwards, indicating the House needed to go back to default.
However, the NDC caucus still describe themselves as Majority indicating that until the full House convenes to agree on the ruling of the Supreme Court, the Speaker’s October 17, 2024 ruling still holds.
The Speaker, following the brouhaha which led to lack of quorum and business for the floor in the House’s last sitting, which was a recall from a previous indefinite adjournment, had to adjourn the House again indefinitely.
But the NPP caucus has initiated another recall for the members to consider some businesses it terms urgent.
But, speaking to some constituents of Ellembelle in the Western region Tuesday, November 26, 2024, John Mahama admonished the NDC MPs not to adhere to the recall.
The former President who also described the NDC as Majority in Parliament noted that the party’s caucus will only return to parliament after the December elections when the NDC have won majority of the seats in the Legislature.
“They say they won’t accept us as the Majority, but they should wait to see after the election results and you’ll know that the NDC is indeed the majority. They have written to recall Parliament to deliberate on issues. 12 days to elections and you are saying we should stop campaigning and go to Parliament. If they want they can go. The NDC will not go to any parliament. We’ll go to Parliament after the election when they have seen their smoothness level,” he stated.
