Gospel singer, Selina Boateng has spoken candidly about the struggles many face in marriage, especially within the Christian community.
Sharing her personal reflections on Onua FM’s Efie Ne Fie show with host Ohemaa Acheampomaa, she revealed that many couples in ministry are quietly enduring pain for the sake of public image.
According to the award-winning singer, if the decision to walk away from marriage came without societal or religious judgment, divorce rates would skyrocket.
“If people had the liberty to openly walk away from their marriages, divorce cases would shoot up like gunfire. It would be an eyesore because the numbers would be overwhelming,” she remarked.
She further opened up about the emotional burden many Christian women, especially those in ministry, carry in silence due to societal expectations and religious scrutiny.
“And the sad part? Once you’re married, you can’t even speak about what you’re going through. Even the people who pressured you into it won’t be there to console you.”
Selina used the opportunity to make a heartfelt appeal to the Christian community to be more compassionate and realistic about marriage, particularly regarding its impact on ministry and mental health.
“I want to use this opportunity to plead with everyone: if you’re a Christian and your marriage falls apart, it affects everything. Your ministry, your peace, your purpose. Especially if you’re a gospel musician. That’s why we need to wake up. We are at fault. And I’m not just speaking for myself, I know many mothers who are suffering in silence. Even when they speak out, they are not believed. They’re blamed instead.”
In her view, the silence surrounding these struggles makes things worse, and the fear of judgment prevents many from seeking help or telling their truth.
“So much is happening behind closed doors. If we allowed people to speak freely, you’d be shocked at how many men of God and gospel musicians would admit they married the wrong person,” she concluded.
