The Deputy Managing Director (Operations/Technical) of Metro Mass Transit Limited, Haroun Apaw-Wiredu, has made serious allegations against the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, claiming that close to 700 buses belonging to the company were dismantled, with their parts sold off as scrap to party cronies.
Speaking on Onua FM, Tuesday, January, 20 2026, Mr. Apaw-Wiredu stated that “many of the buses imported during that period were not suitable for Ghana’s road conditions.”
According to him, the buses were fully electric and structurally weak, making them unfit for purpose upon arrival in the country.
He further revealed that a total of “197 buses have since been declared unserviceable because spare parts were not imported together with the vehicles, rendering effective maintenance impossible.”
These revelations come on the back of Mr. Apaw-Wiredu’s earlier disclosure that Metro Mass Transit sold 313 unserviceable buses in October 2020 for about GH¢2,500 each.
Speaking on TV3 Ghana, Sunday, January 19, he indicated that internal records show the buses were officially declared unserviceable and subsequently disposed of, generating approximately GH¢2.9 million in revenue.
According to him, the proceeds from the sale were expected to be paid into a designated bus acquisition account, though concerns have been raised over the management and utilisation of those funds.
Despite the setbacks and legacy challenges, Mr. Apaw-Wiredu noted that Metro Mass Transit is currently operating only 115 buses across the country, yet recording the highest revenue in the company’s history.
He disclosed that despite operating with a limited fleet, the company is now generating approximately GH¢15–17 million in revenue, compared to about GH¢9 million recorded under the previous NPP administration, adding that the lower revenue at the time contributed to the administration’s inability to pay employees.
