Scores of members of the Ghana Mine Workers Union picketed the premises of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to call on President Akufo-Addo to terminate the mining lease of Future Global Resources without delay.

Leadership of the workers said they will intensify the picketing by bringing all mining workers across the country to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Wednesday, September 18, to demand immediate abrogation of the license of future global resources.

General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, Abdul Moomin Gbana, recalled its previous engagement with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Future Global Resources, which have failed to yield results.

Despite that, numerous calls by the Union to get the mining lease of the company terminated has been unsuccessful.

Mr. Moomin Agbana spoke about picketing the Ministry. He also emphasized on a meeting with the presidency to get the issues resolved failure of which the Union will continue with its picketing.

“We had wanted to picket at the Jubilee House and because we couldn’t do that, we are standing here to let President Akufo-Addo to understand that, where we have reached, we are tired. Where we have reached, we are suffering, where we have reached, we cannot pay school fees, where we have reached, we cannot pay medical bills,” he said.

A letter signed by the Ghana Mine Workers Union, dated August 15, 2024 and addressed to the Lands Minister by the Minerals Commission provided a vivid situational report of the operations of FGR Bogoso Prestea mine, with focus on its compliance with the conditions stated in the letter, of April 17, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has granted approval to the mining workers to picket on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
