The Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has questioned the credibility of claims made by the Minority in Parliament over the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
He says like their previous allegations, he thought the caucus was now going to highlight serious issues when they called for the press conference, only to end up feeding Ghanaians with inconsistent data.
Speaking on the BigIssue segment on the NewDay morning show on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Owusu noted he had expected the Minority to raise substantive issues at its recent press conference.
According to him, he thought the Minority had raised the bar to deal with matters of substance, hence his curiosity to find out what the real issue was.
“When I saw their press conference recently, I thought they had lifted the bar, now we are going to deal with matters of substance so I was curious to find out what really was the issue,” he said.
The Minority, at a press conference addressed by Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh and Samuel Abu Jinapor, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, had claimed that only 824 persons could be confirmed as beneficiaries of both the GH¢5,000 reintegration package and the GH¢500 transport allowance out of 1,964 evacuees.
However, Owusu said the Minority’s own statement was inconsistent. He explained that while the Minority claimed to have matched only 824 persons as having signed for both allowances, paragraph 15 of the same statement indicates different figures.
“They have given you 824 as the number that actually came based on what they saw,” he said, explaining that “Paragraph 15 of the same statement, 1,708 persons signed for the GH¢5,000 reintegration package, while only 1,001 persons signed for the GH¢500. You see the inconsistency?” he questioned.
The UP Communications Director further stated that the inconsistencies undermine the seriousness of the Minority’s claims.
“You claim that when you did a painstaking investigation, you could only match 824 persons as having signed for both the reintegration and the transport allowance. Now you come back and say that upon further checks, you realise that 1,708 persons signed for the reintegration and then 1,001 signed for the transport allowance,” he said.
He added: “So based on this, why must any serious-minded Ghanaian take these words so serious. Because their own paper is inconsistent, bedeviled with a lot of flaws, and we cannot rely on it on any day.”
