Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Energy, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has blamed the Board of the Electricity Company of Ghana over what he described as a “transcendent” purchase of items needed by the company.
In an interview on 3FM’s Sunrise with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port, he questioned whether or not the board of directors gave the directive for the excessive procurement.
“People should not be pushing blames on others, we need to do further investigations to be sure that the Board did not give directive for the purchase and if they are no trail at the board meeting, whoever is involved should be held accountable,” he stated.
Mr. Bedzrah further mentioned that “the Minister (John Jinapor) is not going after any political parties or persons. If the thing is wrong, it is wrong, and we must jointly condemn it. This is not an NDC or NPP matter, anyone found culpable should be dealt with.” Mr. Bedzrah emphasized.
The lawmaker for Ho West called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the whereabouts of the missing containers.
“Our security agencies investigating the missing ECG containers should speed up the case quickly and begin jailing people. Why would taxpayers’ money be used to pay the salaries of people who are simply failing to do their duties?” he queried.
An investigative report submitted by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah has uncovered that more than 1,300 containers, which were meant to be cleared at the Tema Port, are unaccounted for.
Already, some of the containers have been found with some arrests made, including Ghanaians and Chinese nationals, while steps are being taken to retrieve the remaining.
