Some multiple lives have been lost with dozens injured and hospitalised in a head-on collision between a VIP bus and a cargo truck on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The Wednesday, June 25, 2025 accident occurred near Oframase, close to Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West municipality of the Eastern region.
Reports indicate that the VIP bus with registration number GR-2399 which collided the ongoing cargo truck was loaded with flour. The severity of the crash, according to reports, led to several deaths, with some of the bodies mutilated beyond recognition.
Emergency teams, including personnel from the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), responded swiftly to the scene and have since towed the two vehicles to allow flow of traffic on the highway.
The Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital has admitted many of the victims whilst nearby health facilities are also taking care of others.
Although the exact cause of the accident has not been established, some commuters have attributed recent carnage on the stretch to the deteriorating nature of the road, citing the numerous potholes.
Authorities are yet to release an official death toll, citing the condition of the bodies as a challenge to accurate identification and counting.
The Ghana Police Service and the Kwahu West Municipal Fire Department are expected to issue an official report on the incident in the coming days.
