The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has unveiled a vision 2057 agenda with the focus on peace and security, science and innovation and macro-economic stability.

The vision 2057 is an improvement on the 40-year development plan. It is expected that political parties will fashion their manifestos to reflect this long-term plan.

Part of the vision 2057 is to also ensure that successive governments will continue stalled projects of their predecessor governments.

Chairman of the NDPC, Prof. Gyan Baffour disclosed this at the official launch of the vision 2057 at the university of Ghana in Accra on May 28, 2024

Prof. Gyan-Baffour proposed a constitutional instrument that will compel political parties to abide by the vision 2057.

“That is the vision, a long-term development framework that can guide all parties in the preparation of their manifestoes, but not to come out with any rigid plan that will be academically sound to do, but that will be rejected by whoever comes to power,” he said.

In the new development framework, issues about peace and security have been captured as well as science, innovation and land administration.

The need for early warning signs in case of disasters have also been addressed in the vision 2057. The framework has also captured how to address maternal mortality and harnessing of the country’s natural resources, inclusive education and sexual harassment and macro-economic stability.

Prof Gyan-Baffour disagreed with concerns that government has abandoned the existing 40-year development plan.

He explained that the Commission considered all documents including ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ before putting together the vision 2057 framework.

The Director-General of the NDPC, Dr Mensah Aborampah emphasised on the housing deficit, which the document seeks to address.

“We have to be firm, that is the only way we can build the country and the built environment, and we must look at corruption, we have developed local targets to deal with that,” he said.

The vision 2057 framework is expected to make Ghana an upper middle-income country.
