The Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo, Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey, has accused the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, of allegedly interfering in the constituency executive elections.

His accusation follows the Electoral Commission officials’ refusal to declare a winner in the contest for the Yilo Krobo constituency secretary position.

The development comes after Raymond Arku Tetteh reportedly defeated his contender by eight votes after the counting of ballots.

According to the MP, the electoral process was conducted peacefully, with voting and counting completed without any major incident.

He alleged, however that, more than two hours after the counting had ended, the Eastern Regional Minister arrived at the scene alongside the losing aspirant and demanded a recount, reportedly insisting that the winner would not be declared unless the ballots are recounted.

He said the demand stalled the declaration of the results and brought the electoral process to a standstill for several hours.

The MP questioned the authority of the Regional Minister to direct Electoral Commission officials not to declare the winner of the secretaryship position.

Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey further insisted that he would not accept a recount, alleging that he had received information suggesting that the ballot boxes had been tampered with. He expressed concern that a recount could undermine the will of the delegates.

He therefore appealed to the party’s national leadership, particularly the National Chairman and the General Secretary, to intervene and resolve the impasse.

However, Raymond Arku Tetteh, whose election as constituency secretary remains disputed, also rejected calls for a recount. He accused the Regional Minister of creating divisions within the party and allegedly attempting to impose her will on the constituency.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, declined to respond to the allegations levelled against her by the MP.

The disputed secretaryship position remains unresolved, pending an official declaration of the results as ballots are currently with the Eastern regional Police Command.
