After the sacred Banmu (Stool Room) rites on July 6, the newly named Asantehemaa, Ɔdehyeɛ Nana Ama Bonsu, has adopted the historic stool name Nana Yaa Akyaa II, honoring her grandmother, Nana Yaa Akyaa I, the 10th Asantehemaa.
Nana Yaa Akyaa, I reigned from 1884 to 1917 and remains one of the longest-serving Queen Mothers in Asante history. By taking this name, Nana Yaa Akyaa II embraces a heritage of wisdom, strength, and continuity , continuing the leadership that influenced generations.
The name Nana Yaa Akyaa II was formally announced on July 7, signaling the start of a new era of royal duty and service.
The new Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom will be unveiled on Thursday, July 9,2026.
On July 6, the Manhyia Palace was thrown into massive jubilation following the announcement of a new Asante Queenmother by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The day marked a historic moment as His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II named ɔdehyeɛ Nana Ama Bonsu as the new Asantehemaa.
The announcement on Monday July 6, 2026 at the Manhyia Palace was made amid drumming, dancing, and celebrations by chiefs, queen mothers, and residents.
The ceremony was attended by a large gathering of dignitaries, traditional leaders, and well-wishers from across Asanteman and beyond.
Many described the occasion as the dawn of a new era for the Kingdom, praying for unity and progress under the new Queen Mother.
“May her reign be blessed with wisdom, strength, and prosperity as she serves Asanteman with honor and dignity. Congratulations to the new Asantehemaa,” was the resounding message from well-wishers across the region as Kumasi continues to celebrate the historic enstoolment.
