The owner and chief executive officer (CEO) of a popular local eatery on the Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region, ‘the Abossey Okai Chop Bar’, has passed away.
Mr Jonathan K. Amakye died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a short illness.
He was 70 years old, and the 40-day observation will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Abossey Okai New Site.
The entrepreneur who owned and ran the well-known Abossey Okai Chop Bar at Mpraeso Amanfrom, known as Nana Amakye, will be remembered for his generosity, and having fed countless people over the years.
The exact circumstances leading to the demise of the entrepreneur remain unknown.
The Abossey Okai Chop Bar has operated for over 27 years as a landmark roadside chop bar.
The establishment is best known for serving traditional Ghanaian dishes, particularly freshly pounded fufu accompanied by light soup.
It historically served bushmeat options like antelope and grasscutter.
In recent years, the chop bar transitioned away from selling endangered game.
The late owner shifted from supplying bushmeat to becoming an advocate for wildlife protection, eventually allowing a towering awareness billboard and educational posters against pangolin poaching to be mounted at the site.
The long-time owner and operator, Nana Amakye, managed the popular spot and built deep personal connections within the travelling and local community before his passing in August 2026.
