Independent Presidential Candidate, George Twum-Barimah-Adu has stressed that no mother and her newborn baby should be detained in hospital for non-payment of their medical bills.

During his address at the launch of the Mother and Child Care Fund by the Ghana Women Awards Foundation (GWAF) at the Accra International Conference Center on Sunday 6th October 2024, he expressed worry about the growing statistics of how some mothers and their newborn babies are detained in hospitals over unpaid medical bills after delivery.

Mr. Twum-Barimah-Adu maintained that it is not just an economic situation, but a human rights issue and that no woman should be detained after giving birth and no child should start life under such hardship.

“We must ensure that every mother regardless of where she lives, or her financial status has access to health care. My administration will work to expand and improve maternal health care services across the country to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate through access, equity and empowerment” he stated.

For him, the GWAF Mother and Child Care Fund is a bold and necessary step towards addressing the situation and ensuring that mothers and their newborns leave the hospital with dignity which reflects our community, our compassion and our commitment to stand together in the face of adversity.

The presidential candidate explained further that women are the backbone of our communities and when they succeed everyone succeeds therefore, women should be empowered economically, paid deservingly well and offered leadership roles.

According to him, the future of Ghana depends on mothers and their children, hence the launch of the Mother and Child Care Fund by the Ghana Women Awards Foundation (GWAF) is a reminder that we can and must do better for women and children.

“I believe in a Ghana where every woman is empowered; where every mother is supported, and where every child is given the opportunity to thrive right from birth. Together we can build a Ghana where every mother and child is given the care, support and opportunity they deserve” Mr. George Twum-Barimah-Adu iterated.
