Over the years, various administrations of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) have contended with the issue of frivolous activities of some unscrupulous individuals who pose as officials of the DVLA to extort money from clients of the authority.
More often, these imposters who are popularly referred to as goro boys charge very exorbitant fees and render fake services such as; driver’s license, vehicle registration, road worthy certificate among others to their victims.
These unlawful activities have substantially affected the public image of DVLA and the goodwill of the people.
However, some of the so called ‘goro boys’ maintain that they are very genuine people who have courted the trust of their clients to act as their agents to facilitate their business with DVLA.
“We are not goro boys but agents. Some of us are very genuine people who have gained the confidence of people who assign us to do the legwork and facilitate their business with DVLA due to their busy schedules.
“I agree that there are bad people parading as officials of the DVLA to take undue advantage of their victims and drag the name of the authority into disrepute but not all of us are bad people” Kwame Adjei-Gyamfi popularly known as Ghana Man told 3FM on April 8.
He added that though the DVLA has not formally registered them as agents, some of them have their businesses legally registered with the Registrar General’s Department and their clients are aware that they are not officials of DVLA.
“It will interest you to know that the DVLA’s ‘Form A’ makes provision for particulars of agents, hence it is proper for the Authority to formally register our agencies to streamline our activities and also rid the place of the miscreants and imposters” Adjei-Gyamfi added.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey has affirmed his commitment to ensuring that the promise which was made by President John Mahama to recognize and regulate the work of ‘Goro Boys’ prior to his election is fulfilled.
“A respectful son will never depart from his father’s good vision” he affirmed.
The quest to recognize and regulate the activities of the ‘Goro Boys’ by the DVLA as indicated by the Chief Executive has since sparked debates among the general public.
