National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has praised the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) for averting a what he calls a “potential industrial action.”

He says COMAC’s role in postponing the GHC1 energy sector levy implementation has saved the country confusion that would have arisen from the misunderstanding.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Ministry of Finance had earlier announced June 9, 2025, as the implementation date after the President’s assent to the law on June 5.

However, COMAC raised concerns about the impact on its members’ businesses and, in a statement on May 8, 2025, requested the government to reconsider the date.

The Ministries of Energy and Green Transition and Finance, together with the GRA and NPA, met with COMAG leadership to address their concerns, and a new implementation date of June 16 was agreed.

Commenting on the development on TV3’s BigIssue on NewDay Monday, June 9, 2025, the NPA CEO, Mr. Tameklo, noted that but for the consensus arrived at by stakeholders, commotion would have erupted.

“I want to thank them for that magnanimity in averting a potential industrial action,” he stated.

He thanked COMAC for their magnanimity in averting a potential industrial action. Mr. Tameklo said the Chamber deserves commendation because if they had not reached an agreement, it would have been difficult for anyone to lift petroleum products, creating serious problems nationwide, given that energy drives everything.

He noted that the concerns raised by COMAC were genuine and beneficial to all, stressing that their issue had to do with the date of implementation and not the levy itself.

“And if you read the statement carefully, COMAC is really not against the GHC1, it is the implementation because to them, it is going to bring additional financial burden to them and in the circumstance, felt that it appeared more like a fiat. The Finance Minister’s intervention to allow the whole thing to move it to next week will allow them to put their finance in place,” he added.

He added that the resolution is going to make his work at the NPA easier for him.
