Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) admits to taking certain wrong decisions while in government under the erstwhile President Akufo-Addo.

Prof Ocquaye who spearheaded a committee to look into the party’s huge defeat in the 2024 elections, noted that certain actions and inactions of government should have been done differently while they were in power.

He explained in a yet-to-be aired interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu that the party cannot improve upon its performance in future if it does not accept it shortfalls, stressing that internal admission of guilt is necessary for future success.

“Basically, we accept certain problems, we accept that certain decisions were not right, we accept that certain actions and inactions should be done differently so that when we are in power again, we will better serve the people.

“And those internal admissions are very important, if you don’t accept your wrong, you cannot improve upon your performance in the future,” he stated.

The NPP is currently in a period of transition following its huge defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The NPP is preparing to elect its next leader for the 2028 general elections. On January 22, 2026, five aspirants signed a “Peace Pact” (MoU) to support the eventual winner.

The primary election is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The five candidates for the flagbearership are: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (Former Vice-President and 2024 candidate), Ken Ohene Agyapong (Former MP for Assin Central), Dr. Bryan Acheampong (MP for Abetifi), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (MP for Bosomtwe) and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (Former NPP General Secretary).

The party’s campaign for the flagbearership race has been fueled with jabs at each other with aspirants blaming each side for the party’s loss in the previous elections.

The peace pact is expected to unite the aspirants and bring peace in the upcoming primaries.
