Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to realign its priorities and stop aiming for victory in the next general election.

According to him, the party is “not ripe” for serious electoral competition anytime soon.

“What they are doing now, though they mean well, amounts to romancing a stone,” he said, speaking frankly about the state of the party.

“NPP can start thinking about serious contestation after 2032,” he said on TV3’s KeyPoints on June 21.

Prof. Gyampo, acknowledged that he respects some of the party’s flagbearer hopefuls, but warned that they must stop acting like “political ostriches.”

He advised the NPP to rather focus on rebuilding its structures and positioning itself as a credible opposition to the Mahama-led government.

“Mahama is doing well in the fight against corruption, but we still demand more. Ghana needs a strong, credible opposition to keep government in check,” he noted.

He urged party faithful to invest in making the NPP a strong alternative rather than chasing power prematurely, saying it would serve the nation better in the long term.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set Saturday, January 31, 2026, for its Presidential primary.

This is the outcome of a NEC meeting held on June 17.

The meeting, held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, was used to deliberate on proposed constitutional reforms by the Prof Mike Oquaye committee.
