A youth group in the Ashanti Region, the Ashanti Concerned Youth, has thrown its support behind two presidential aspirants ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The group announced its position at a media engagement, calling on delegates to support candidates they say have roots in the region and a proven record of public service.
According to the group, the Ashanti Region has benefited significantly from leadership originating from the area, citing development projects undertaken during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The group believes a candidate from the region would prioritize development and strengthen the party’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
The two aspirants endorsed by the group are Engineer Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former presidential press secretary, and former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Ebenezer Nyamekye is the President of the group.
“When President Kufuor had the opportunity to serve this nation, Ashanti Region saw major development, including the Asokwa Interchange, Sofoline Interchange, and the Komfo Anokye Emergency Centre,” he said.
The group believes a candidate from the region would prioritize development and strengthen the party’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
“Both candidates have served either this region or the nation. Delegates should decide who has served best and support that person in the interest of Ashanti and Ghana.”
Responding to questions about tribalism, the group rejected the claims, insisting their position is based on performance and loyalty rather than ethnic considerations.
“This is not about tribalism. It is about supporting our own because we believe our candidates are competent and capable.”
The group says it remains confident delegates will heed their call when voting takes place on January 31.
