The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has set the records straight on allegations being made against him about the fate of sitting Members of Parliament in the New Patriotic Party on their upcoming parliamentary primaries.

According to the Vice President, rumours making rounds that he wants sitting MPs to oppose being contested by others in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primary is a palpable falsehood.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the NPP is a party that believes in democracy and believes giving everyone the opportunity to contest for positions rather strengthens them, the reason he cannot fathom how a section of people in their wildest imaginations would assume he wants to deny others the chance to compete.

The Vice President was speaking to party delegates Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Tatale-Sanguli in the Northern region as part of his nationwide engagement with party executives ahead of the NPP’s November 4 presidential primary.

“The third lie that I’ve heard this morning is that I went to say that all sitting MPs should oppose that nobody should contest a sitting MP. How can I say that? The party constitution cannot even allow that. This party is stronger when we have democracy working so I will not say every sitting MP must go unopposed. There must be consensus in any constituency so that lie should be left alone,” he stated.

“But as I say, their tactic is that if you miss the ball, don’t miss the man but as for this, they will miss the man because we will not allow their lies to take root,” Dr. Vice President continued.

The NPP will hold its presidential primary Saturday, November 4, 2023, to elect a flag bearer for the 2024 general elections. Four candidates are contesting for the position including Assin Central lawmaker, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Owusu-Afriyie Akoto, a former Agric Minister, Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Member of Parliament for Mampong and the Vice President.
