The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, has denied claims that the party’s upcoming presidential primary is skewed in favour of any particular candidate.
He has dismissed the assertions that the party’s decision to change the election timelines is designed to give an advantage to a specific candidate, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flag bearer.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NPP resolved in a Tuesday, June 17, 2025 meeting to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026.
According to the party leadership, this new date is based on recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee.
While some have speculated that this decision could give one candidate an unfair advantage, General Secretary Kodua Frimpong dismissed these claims as untrue.
“I will be very surprised for anyone to think that an election that is yet to be conducted will favour a particular candidate,” he said on Accra-based Channel One TV Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
According to him, the NPP’s internal election structure has remained consistent and democratic over the years.
He said “If you have monitored our electoral history even from 1992, 1996 to 2000, at every election — from national through to polling stations — about 70%, sometimes even 80%, of current executives retain their positions.”
Kodua explained that the sequence of the elections, irrespective of which one starts first, does not favour any particular candidate, be it at the national level or the polling station.
“The fact that you may even start from polling station to national or national to polling station does not make it skewed towards a particular person. There are current executives who will still continue to be executives,” he added.
Meanwhile, a 2024 flag bearer aspirant of the party, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has criticised the leadership for the decision, saying organising a presidential primary ahead of national executives is borne out of greed and senselessness.
