The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has established a nine-member committee to spearhead constitutional amendments as proposed by the Prof Mike Oquaye-led 2024 election review committee.

The 11-member committee, chaired by the former Speaker of Parliament was tasked with investigating the causes of the significant electoral loss at both the parliamentary and presidential levels.

The committee submitted its report to the National Council of the party at a meeting on April 16.

Addressing journalists after the crucial meeting, the General Secretary, Justin Koduah Frimpong, said the 9-member constitutional amendment committee will start work immediately.

“If you will recall, somewhere in January, Council had an emergency meeting and set up a review committee to review the 2024 elections. The team led by Rev Mike Oquaye submitted their report to National Council. National Council has accepted the report but there are several steps that we need to take. As we have received the report today, we need to sit down to review the report. Based on the summary of the presentation made by Prof Mike Oquaye, there will be need for some amendments. So based on that, the National Council has constituted a 9-member committee to look at the report particularly where proposals for amendments have been made of our constitution,” he announced.

He stated that at the appropriate time the relevant details of the report will be made available to the party’s supporters.

“We want the media, and the public know that we received the report today. We are yet to go into the details of what it entails in the report. In the coming days whatever we have to communicate with our supporters or the rank and file of our party, we will do so. But we want to caution members of our party not to be in haste to say things which are not in the report. There is only one report, and the report is with the National Council,” Mr Frimpong stated.

The General Secretary noted that the leadership of the party will soon undertake a nationwide tour to share details of the report.

The National Council meeting, held in Accra, was attended by stalwarts of the NPP including ex President Akufo-Addo, 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh among others.
